The names of skipper Scott Pendlebury, Brownlow medallist Dane Swan and star forward Travis Cloke were all missing yesterday when the first AFL squads of the year were named for the NAB Challenge blockbuster against Hawthorn at Launceston's Aurora Stadium.
Swan, whose 2014 was destroyed by injuries, was dominant in last week's intraclub match at Olympic Park, a game which both Pendlebury and Cloke took part in.
Defender Nathan Brown, who pulled out of that match at the last minute due to a corkie, has been named.
However, Collingwood will give its fans a glimpse into the future, with six new players a chance to make their black-and-white debut.
These include the club's trio of recruits from other clubs last year, Travis Varcoe (from Geelong), Jack Crisp (Brisbane) and Levi Greenwood (North Melbourne).
Last year's no.5 draft pick Jordan De Goey and Matthew Goodyear (the 48th pick) have been named, along with former Brisbane forward Patrick Karnezis, who did not play last year due to injury.
Exciting youngster Nathan Freeman, who made just one appearance last year in which he hurt his hamstring in the NAB Challenge, has also been named.
In comparison Hawthorn announced a stronger outfit, with 13 premiership players from last year's grand final win over Sydney included.
But skipper and Norm Smith medallist Luke Hodge, Grant Birchall (knee), Cyril Rioli and Brian Lake are among those missing.
The other flag winners who will be absent are Matt Spangher, Isaac Smith, David Hale, Shaun Burgoyne and Matt Suckling.
Former Melbourne full-back James Frawley will get his first start as a Hawk, while youngsters James Sicily, Kaiden Brand, Dallas Willsmore, Daniel Howe, Teia Miles, Marc Pittonet, Jared Hardisty and Jermaine Miller-Lewis are also in the squad. Speedster Jed Anderson has been named after shoulder problems last year.
The squads will be cut to 26 just before the start of the 7.10pm match. As of yesterday more than 14,000 tickets had been sold.
