Lapoinya-Preolenna coupe FD053A has stood for thousands of years and survived selective logging about 60 years ago.
Last September, a resident living on the border of the 68-hectare forest received a notice that Forestry Tasmania was looking to log the site.
Residents in the area have struggled to understand the reasoning behind the proposal, with the coupe home to 27 different species of birds, disease-free devils and the endangered Brooker’s gum tree.
In an attempt to save the site, residents and wider community members have joined forces to try and convince Forestry Tasmania officials to back off.
The group has also appealed to the Forestry Stewardship Council and the government not to give Forestry Tasmania certification to clear the site.
‘‘I think if they continue to clear-fell in native forests, they will continue to decrease the number of native animals in this state,’’ North-West conservationist Dave Reid said.
‘‘We would prefer to help if we can, but we will hinder if we need to.’’
Forestry Tasmania's Three Year Wood Production Plan currently states 35.7 hectares of the coupe is being considered for harvesting.
‘‘Forestry Tasmania looks forward to meeting with local residents on Friday to listen to their concerns, to update them on the preparation of the draft Forest Practices Plan for this coupe, and to continue working with them to address any remaining issues before finalising the plans for this proposed operation,’’ a spokeswoman said.
‘‘In addition to measures to manage these values within the coupe area, the coupe is immediately adjacent to the 290-hectare Flowerdale River Reserve which has been permanently set aside from any harvesting.’’
The meeting between concerned residents and Forestry Tasmania officials will take place in Lapoinya this morning.
A date for the planned log has not yet been set.
