The Launceston product, on board his DJR Team Penske Falcon, finished fifth in Sunday's final test session.
"It is funny really; at Homebush [when he was a wildcard for last year's final event] I would have been happy to climb into the midfield and now we are there this weekend you just want to take the next step up," Ambrose told the V8 Supercars website.
"I think we got more out of this test than a lot of the other teams achieved.
"It has been a great weekend for DJR Team Penske. From the time I got [to Sydney Motorsport Park to] the end of the test, I feel a lot more confident and much clearer with the feel of the car."
Sunday's final session was Ambrose most fruitful of the weekend after finishing 14th in Sunday's shootout, and 23rd, 10th and 15th in Saturday's test sessions.
His focus will now turn towards the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide from February 26 to March 1.
It is an event where the 38-year-old has won five times from six starts.
Ambrose is returning to the category where he is a two-time champion after spending eight years racing in the US.
