The group was informed that it had received the money - its largest ever donation - following the Good Money Gala in Amsterdam.
The annual gala is hosted by European environment groups, who collect money donated from several nations and determine who to award it to each year.
The money will be spent on constructing the group's new ``dream project'' vessel - a ship large enough to carry a helicopter and travel faster than Japanese whaling vessels.
Sea Shepherd spokesman Adam Burling said construction of the vessel would take place in Vietnam and begin immediately.
The vessel is expected to dock in Tasmania in the coming years.
A name for the vessel has not yet been determined.
