The 17-year-old, who plays off a four handicap, fired an opening round of 73.
He shared the lead with Queensland golfer Dylan Gardner from Kilcoy, a 16-year-old playing off a two handicap.
A 17-year-old Victorian scratch golfer Jack Murdoch finished on 74 as did Riverside’s Zachary Swan, the 16-year-old son of Riverside professional Michael Swan, who plays off a handicap of five.
A field of 25 boys teed off in the tournament with course conditions good, but windy.
In the women’s competition, the leader after the first 18 holes was Queenslander Kate Law.
The 17-year-old, from the Maryborough, plays off a scratch handicap and shot a 1 under par 71 for the opening round.
She leads by four shots from Taipei golfer Hsin-Yu Lu, who is a 13-year-old from the Miramar Club in Taiwan.
She plays off a four handicap and carded a round of 75 to be tied with 14-year-old Victorian Linley Ooi, from the Kew Golf Club.
Defending champion Alexandra Hillard from the Sandhurst Club in Victoria, a 15-year-old playing off a one handicap – was off the pace after a first round of 78.
A total of 16 golfers are playing in the women’s field.
The tournament continues with 36 holes being played today before finishing with a final 18 tomorrow.
