The 20-year-old is at present playing with the Townsville Fire, who sit on top the WNBL ladder.
Wilson had her debut season with the Launceston Tornadoes in 2014, and the announcement yesterday that she was returning for a second season came just a week after the club announced brilliant guard Lauren Mansfield, from Adelaide, as its first import for next year.
‘‘Alex is an outstanding athlete with unlimited potential,’’ new Tornadoes coach Reece Potter said.
Potter had a chance to watch Wilson first hand during last season’s WNBL games when he was an assistant coach with the Sydney Uni Flames.
Wilson is originally from South Australia and after gaining a scholarship with the Australian Institute of Sport earned a place with the Townsville Fire, where she impressed last year, winning the rookie of the year.
‘‘I was very honoured to win the award considering the calibre of players who have won it in the past,’’ Wilson said.
‘‘I’m looking forward to getting back to Launceston and wearing the red and white again next year.’’
The 174cm guard said she thoroughly enjoyed her time with the Tornadoes in 2014 and made a host of friends within the club, along with the host family she stayed with.
Wilson said one of her immediate ambitions was to be part of the Australian Uni games team that will play overseas in 2015, and long-term she would like to play for the Australian Opals.
In 2013 Wilson represented the Australian Gems at the FIBA under 19 world championships, winning a bronze medal, and at the national under 20 championships she took out the most valuable award.
Potter said: ‘‘Alex is showing incredible form with the Townsville Fire and has contributed significantly to their ladder-leading performances.
‘‘I’m really looking forward to working with Alex – she has such a natural talent and has the capabilities of being a major contributor at both ends of the court for the Tornadoes.’’
Potter said that with the combination of Wilson and Mansfield the team was in a good position to build on the club from last year.
If Townsville can maintain its top billing and makes the WNBL grand final, Wilson said she expected to be in Launceston after the grand final on March 8.
