LAUNCESTON City Council complains, with good cause, that it is solely funding regional resources enjoyed by many outside Launceston. This same principle applies within the Launceston municipality on the issue of parking.
The city centre bears all the burden of cost associated with this while the shopping centres elsewhere in greater Launceston make no contribution.
Surely it is only fair to create something of a level playing field so that in all areas where people park in order to shop, go to work or engage in sporting activities, there are charges?
If such charges were spread across the whole town area, then the charges for city centre parking could be brought back to reasonable levels.
Why should the outlying shopping centres be immune to those charges now being solely levied to the detriment of CBD businesses? And it is, of course, the shops in the CBD that give our city much of its character and attraction.
This could be the single biggest change to rejuvenate Launceston’s heart.
