Justice Minister Vanessa Goodwin announced this morning that Hobart-based Lawyer Patrick Lunn had been appointed to the position which was vacated by previous chair Peter Worrall.
The government also announced an independent review of the commission, to be headed up by former Tasmanian Supreme Court Judge, the Honorable Peter Evans.
"Over a number of years, Legal Aid has struggled to meet the demand for its services. The Liberal Government and all stakeholders have continued to be concerned about this situation," Ms Goodwin said.
"After consultation with the Commission and the Law Society of Tasmania, the Government has decided to undertake an independent review of the Legal Aid Commission of Tasmania.
Ms Goodwin said that the view is expected to take three comnths to complete.
The review will consider governance and membership of the Legal Aid Commission, the management of grants of legal assistance, the use of private legal practitioners to deliver services, and the interaction between the LACT and Community Legal Centres, Ms Goodwin said.
