"WEAN(ING) our state off woodchips" (Georgie Burgess, The Examiner, October 21) is very straight forward.

Weaning ourselves off being dominated by small minorities who oppose the obvious woodchip-weaning-solution - a pulp mill - is less so.
But why?
The overwhelming majority of Tasmanians support downstream processing of our timber resource - as they would support downstream processing of agricultural and other products - because they recognise the employment and broad economic benefits.
What has been missing has been a determination by government to give unqualified support to those willing to build a pulp mill and a determination to "stare down" (shirtfront?) regional opponents.
The Hodgman Liberal Government has the opportunity - and the public mandate - to be responsible for that "next week's headline" - Pulp mill a step closer.
It has a responsibility to demonstrate it believes "the state needs to add value in our own backyard" and if that means some other backyards have to bear a bit of discomfort - then that's a "so be it"!
