McGiveron, who holds three Tasmanian records for catching Mako sharks, had her first time behind the wheel at Carrick last weekend, competing in an eight-race series at Carrick, Latrobe and in Hobart.
"Now I'm in town rather than being on the East Coast, and being with [her partner] Rob who is into the speedway got me interested in it," McGiveron said.
"The Formula 500 came up just out of chance and Rob had bought in, I thought he was going to race it, but he wanted me to. I never thought in my wildest ever dreams I would race one, but now I have I really enjoy it."
She said she realised the hard work that is involved in the category, finishing eighth in her first race at Carrick last weekend.
"The confidence and speed will come over time, watching it is obviously very different to actually getting in and competing in one."
While she has put the rod down for the moment, she says she will still fish every now and then, but her focus is on her racing.
McGiveron will race for the second time this weekend at Latrobe.
