"We bought the plans from the US and over a period of about seven years we built it," Mr de Bruyn said.
"We adopted the plans to suit our own liking."
The end result was a three-person, land and water hovercraft built from aluminium-clad coolroom-type material.
He explained that a skirt around the vehicle trapped air created by the machine's engine, propelling it about 30 centimetres from the ground.
Mr de Bruyn said he'd had many a good time on the hovercraft.
"I've taken it to Kelso and Bellingham on the water and on the beach," he said.
"When we were at Bellingham there were quite a few shops and you're in a bit of a valley and I'm going up and down the beach - people could hear something and it sounded like an aeroplane and they were looking at the sky but they couldn't see anything.
"I can't operate it any more due to health reasons - I'd like to be able to, but it's just a bit much."
Mr de Bruyn said he hoped to nab $5000 for the machine. He can be contacted on 0419 590 989.
