CANDIDATES
BRIDGET KATHLEEN ARCHER
First elected to Council in 2009 and elected Deputy Mayor in 2011, I have actively demonstrated my commitment to increased transparency and accountability and responsible financial management.
For future success we need a united team with a strategic vision.
I believe I have the necessary attitude, enthusiasm and leadership skills required to further those aims and to bring Council and community together to advance our municipality into the future.
Please vote 1 to re-elect me as Councillor.
Together we can achieve a vibrant and successful future.
CHRISTOPHER WILLIAM ASHLEY
Taking steps to remedy the reputation of this municipality should be a high priority for the incoming council.
If elected I will promote a close, open and honest relationship with the Rate Payers Association, Chamber of Commerce and the constituents of the municipality.
I believe we must have transparency in non-confidential council matters with open Council meetings being held after hours to encourage greater public involvement and make it more attractive to potential councillors. I will lobby for increased security, including a higher 24hr police/ populous ratio.
JOHN AUSTIN
If elected I will support better consultation with the community, ensure accountability for Council actions and importantly careful spending of your money.
I will endeavour to promote our community and better it in any way possible.
I am a long time resident, have served on committees and boards, played sports and am determined to get the best outcomes with the help of a new Council.
I am appalled at the amounts of money that have been spent and wasted over the last few years by the current Council and ex management with no community consultation.
Change is needed now!

My candidate statement 3 years ago identified the need to implement reforms.
The appointment of our GM has continued that process as we find new ways of streamlining operations.
While I am not nominating as Mayor I have much knowledge and experience to offer and will continue promoting a stable open Council with informed decisions based on what is best for the entire municipality.
I will give a commitment to work with you and continue my strong involvement with the community.
I ask for your vote to be part of a team for the future through innovation imagination and inspiration.
DOUG BURT
I seek your number 1 vote in the 2014 election.
As an experienced independent, no longer working full time, I have the required knowledge to ensure the George Town Municipality is continued to be recognised as a great place to raise a family or maybe to later retire to, we do have a lot to offer across our area Local Govt will undergo much change in the next few years, our council must ensure we do not lose our identity while also exploring cost saving opportunities through resource sharing, a strong professional team, thinking long term with common goals will secure our community future.
TIM CORY
You will have noticed me walking round the municipality.
This is not just for my health, its so I can see first hand the state of our municipality - pavements, road surfaces, cleanliness in streets and vegetation growth etc.
Its also so that I can talk face-to-face with anyone who lives in the municipality, listen to concerns and then carry those concerns into Council and facilitate reasonable and necessary changes.
My focus in Council has always been reasonable charges for rates and services, security for the individual, health and wellbeing and improved services for children and families.
GREG DAWSON

If you believe George Town’s Council needs refreshing with new ideas that preserve our past, and enhance our future; while developing opportunities for our youth and elderly residents.

JOHN GLISSON
Long term resident of George Town, recently retired, committed to making council more responsive to community needs.
I offer council a fresh approach with a positive, conciliatory manner, avoiding unproductive personality or factional conflicts.
I believe in transparent open council working with the community for the community.
I support local business and the development of community assets. Our community needs a clear plan for the future with input from all electors.
I support establishing a forum where community can bring forward ideas to seek support from council and the community.
BRENDA GUNST
George Town electors deserve Councillors who represent their views.
The Australian Constitution supports government of the people, for the people, by the people.
Ordinary people need to be heard at all levels of Government.
Too few women are represented, we need a balance.
Too often we find that once elected, Councillors vote without input by their constituents.
I want to hear your concerns, work for a holistic, inclusive, functional and happy community.
Decisions made must consider all angles without self-interest or secrecy.
We need to start now at local level to reconnect our community.
TIM HARRIS
Since returning home to live all I have heard about council has been anger & frustration at the secrecy and lack of consultation surrounding their processes, I would like to see a return to an open, honest and consultative approach by council to their electors.
I would also seek to review management decisions, over many years, that have seen projects that are now no longer used for their original purpose.
Also I would seek to review the use of outside contractors on tasks that local contractors or council employees are capable of undertaking. Keep it local!!
TONY MCKENZIE
While running my shop I have experienced the challenges facing local business owners.
I have witnessed, and experienced the frustrations in both the business and residential sectors.
George Town needs a councillor who will ask “Why” to the decisions that effect the residents and ensure that those decisions benefits them and not done because that’s whats always be done.
I want George Town to grow as a community and with experience gained from my employments in various community service roles, coupled with my open door approach I will be able to make a beneficial contribution to George Town.
RICHARD NICHOLLS
The councillors that have overseen the decay of the municipality for the last 25 years have let us down!
I’ve had enough of the waste, and a stagnant council headed up by a leadership lacking in vision.
I want to see a new direction.
I want to see the promotion of the community spirit, the beauty and pride that is so strong within the district.
I want to see the payment of my rates not as a tax but as an investment.
Now there is an opportunity for every one of us to bring about this change.
All you need do is give me a go: absolute change for a brighter future!
GEORGE O'SIGN
With 30 years experience as a Council employee & four years as a Councillor, I have a vast working knowledge of the Council, the municipality, the people and local businesses.
Now retired, having previously spent 30 years as a building surveyor for the Council, I am 100% committed to ensuring that Council listens to its customers.
I fully support sustainable development and local business, the adoption of a fair & equitable rating system, and all organisations in the community.
I am a true team player who will work to ensure that Council offers the best possible services to the municipality.
TIM PARISH
I am a life-long George Town resident, married to Dianne and am involved in community activities.
It has been my privilege to represent you on a Council that has successfully balanced the budget, whilst keeping rate rises to a minimum and at the same time improving services.
Responsible management is important in maintaining the viability of George Town council and ensuring our independence so that the concerns of our town, rural and seaside communities will be heard.
I ask that you vote 1 for Tim Parish for Deputy Mayor and Councillor.
PETER PARKES
I need your help, I want to re-ignite community engagement with a council that people feel connected to, confident in and trust.
We deserve a council that's ready to listen and conduct real consultation.
I want people to feel proud of their community again and to have an equitable voice in decision making.
We need to make sure big decision that effect the entire community are fully explored.
We need to engage the youth and let them take ownership of the future, feel proud of their town and give them hope.
You can help by giving me your number 1 vote in this year’s Council elections.
BOB POOLEY
I have been a resident of George Town for 30 years and have been involved in many voluntary organisations including presidents of local sporting clubs, Tamar Valley folk festival committees and other community leadership roles.
I have a keen interest in politics and have made many contacts lobbying support for various local projects with both state and federal members of all political persuasions.
In these difficult times I feel that it is vitally important to develop some new innovative ideas to generate business growth, employment and united community support for our region.
