Before 7.30am, wind gusts had already topped 50km/h in Launceston, and reaching 70km/h on the state's East Coast.
North-westerly winds are expected to continue, dropping to 15 to 20km/h this evening.
Showers are expected throughout the day, with Launceston tipped to receive between 5 and 10 millimetres of rain.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued marine wind warnings for the state, including:
Gale warning for the far North-West Coast, South-West Coast and central West Coast.
Strong wind warning for the Derwent Estuary, Frederick Henry Bay and Norfolk Bay, Storm Bay, Channel, Central North Coast, Banks Strait and Franklin, East of Flinders Island, upper East Coast, lower East Coast and south East Coast.
Small craft alert for the Central Plateau lakes and South-West lakes.
