EARLIER: A Launceston man has been found guilty of two counts of assault against his ex-partner and her baby.

The jury in the Launceston Supreme Court returned its verdict before lunchtime today, after deliberating this morning.

The two counts of assault relate to the accused, who cannot be identified, smashing a car window when his ex-partner and her baby were sitting inside.

The glass cut the two victims.

However, the jury found the man not guilty of a further two counts of assault.

These two counts relate to the Crown's accusation that the man had viciously attacked the woman inside their house, after the smashing of the car window.

The man, 35, had already pleaded guilty to one count of assault on Monday, where, after breaking the car window, he pulled the woman from the car while she was still holding her baby, and bashed her on the ground.

During the Crown's sentencing submissions, prosecutor Luke Brett handed up the man's prior convictions and said the man had been serving an eight-month jail term and had two prior matters for common assault.

Mr Brett said the man was due to have been released on June 6, but was in custody for the Supreme Court proceedings.

Justice Robert Pearce will hear a plea in mitigation from defence counsel Adrian Hall this afternoon.
