Each year the expo gives fishers the opportunity to have a shot at snagging a trout, or salmon, from Brumbys Creek at Cressy — licence or not — on Saturday and Sunday, September 20 and 21.
Tasmanian Trout Expo's Richard Goss said about 1200 anglers were expected to wetaline in search of the $10,000 prize fish, Trudy the Trout.
Mr Goss said the school competition, to be held on Monday, September 22, was also growing in popularity and anticipated about 350 children would compete in the team event.
‘‘The hot tip is that this year there will be some big Atlantic salmon and a good number of rainbow trout released into the creek for the weekend,'' he said.
‘‘Looking back at last year, the heaviest fish was a whopping 3.79-kilogram Atlantic salmon, caught by Jenny Neville of Ferntree, Hobart.’’
Mr Goss, who is also a teacher at Cressy District High School, said the school was still in the process of selecting its fishing team and was hoping to topple last year’s champions.
‘‘Last year’s senior division was won by Friends School who caught a combined bag of 10.56kg,’’ he said.
‘‘Meander Primary School won the primary section with a combined bag of 5.39kg.’’
