Rangers too strong for Torns

LAUNCESTON Tornadoes last night lost to the Dandenong Rangers at Elphin Sports Centre in the second-last match for the season.

The Tornadoes came close to evening scores with the away team during the game’s final quarter but the Rangers proved too strong, finishing the match 82 points to 69.

Tornadoes’ coach Peta Sinclair last night said she was pleased with her team’s performance against the league finals contenders.

‘‘In the last quarter we got within six points of them, but we ran out of legs towards the end there which made it difficult for us,’’ Sinclair said.

‘‘Dandenong are quite a versatile team with lots of experience; national elite players, they have some really good young players coming up as well — they’re an all-rounder team.’’

It was the final match for Canberra fly-in-fly-out player Abby Bishop, who scored 20 points and gained 14 rebounds.

‘‘Alex Wilson scored 15 and eight rebounds, with seven assists, Lauren Mansfield scored six with four rebounds, and lastly Emma Russell had 11 points and three steals,’’ Sinclair said.

She said the Tornadoes’ next match against Frankston Blues will be the last for retiring Alicia Riley.

‘‘We’ll be wanting to send her out on a high and come away with a win,’’ Sinclair said.
