While the Wesfarmers’ Collection celebrates Australian art dating back to colonial times and includes more than 900 works, this touring exhibition, Luminous World, showcases 60 recent paintings, photography and sculpture.

University of Tasmania teacher David Stephenson as well as Bill Hensen and Rosemary Laing are among the photographers featured in the show.

There is bark art by John Marwundjul, ‘‘one of Australia’s most important indigenous artists’’, acrylic and enamel paintings by Karl Wiebke, an oil by Susan Norrie and a retro-reflective work by Rosalie Gascoigne.

‘‘It’s exciting that Wesfarmers is touring works to Tasmania,’’ Academy Gallery director Malcom Bywaters said yesterday.

‘‘That the Tasmanian College of the Arts gets it right here in Launceston is fantastic, a real privilege.’’

Wesfarmers Ltd’s managing director Richard Goyder said of the exhibition: ‘‘We hope that Launceston will enjoy these works and marvel at the ingenuity and vision of the artists represented, as we at Wesfarmers do, surrounded by inspirational art in our daily lives.’’

Mr Goyder said the collection had grown from an aim to ‘‘accentuate the value of art in the workplace and encourage an understanding of the importance to society of supporting creative thinking and artistic vision’’.

Luminous World will be on exhibition at Academy Gallery, Inveresk, until September 21. The gallery is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Admission is free.
