The third tier of government is closest to its constituents, unlike federal and state politicians and should not exclude competition.
Surely business has far more competent top performers than former cabinet ministers, these executives who have had to perform in the real world and be held accountable to their respective firms or boards.
For instance a top marketing executive would not want to detract business in the CBD by moving bus terminals and would take note of the Metro general manager of the adverse effects on businesses should the terminal be relocated.
The winds of change are needed in local government and our highly competent present Treasurer Peter Gutwein in his address to their local conference has given them food for thought and their need to be accountable to their communities in these challenging times.
