NRM North funding on hold
FUNDING for NRM North's Tamar Estuary and Esk Rivers program will lie on the table of the George Town Council for a further month as it investigates its funding options. Both decisions were postponed at a previous meeting. Cr Stephen Geale voted against continuing funding to Tamar NRM, stating the group was "another organisation that confuses me". He had previously stated "the government should control the shorelines and forest and whatever else they do" in relation to NRM North and said Tamar NRM could tell him little about what it had achieved in the municipality. "I don't know why NRM North and Tamar NRM don't work together," he said. Cr Tim Cory warned against toying with nature, "a very powerful enemy".

Dissatisfaction over Brown inquiry
THE president of the George Town Residents' and Ratepayers Association at yesterday's council meeting expressed his distaste for the council's treatment of an investigation into its formal general manager. John Austin asked the council about its investigation into workplace allegations against Stephen Brown. The investigation was dropped following Mr Brown's resignation earlier this year. "I won't be making any comment in relation to that," Mayor Roger Broomhall said.
Mayor mum over $87,000
GEORGE Town Mayor Roger Broomhall yesterday refused to answer a question relating to $87,000 spent on a non-existent car park in 2008. George Town resident Richard Nicholls questioned the council on the money allocated for the project, which did not proceed. "It is evident no car park was applied for, built or completed," Mr Nicholls said. "Where is the $87,000?" Cr Broomhall said: "That question has been answered and is the subject of legal procedures." More questions from resident Winston Archer were also blocked.
Town's `bogan' status hailed
PUBLIC question time at the George Town Council meeting was broken up by a resident congratulating the town on its bogan status. A George Town man was a finalist on reality television show Bogan Hunters, which aimed to find "Australia's biggest bogan". The town was mentioned on morning television show Sunrise yesterday alongside Southern suburb Bridgewater. "We are now the bogan capital of Australia," the resident said.
