The call to introduce free parking in the city comes from Cityprom, in response to a CBD visitation survey last year which showed one-third of respondents wanted cheaper parking options.
Cityprom executive officer Vanessa Cahoon said regional cities that faced declining CBD visitation had instituted free parking trials to boost activity.
``We would certainly be encouraging of a trial period for the city,'' she said.
``If the results aren't supported then at least we have good solid evidence to prove otherwise.''
Cityprom has proposed that the council stop their two-hour free-parking initiative, between 3.30pm and 5.30pm, at Elizabeth Street, Paterson East and Paterson West car parks and introduce first two hours free parking at those locations from Monday to Saturday.
The council is expected to make a decision by the end of the month.
