Ambulance Tasmania was called to the boy's aid about 2.15pm after he injured his lower leg jumping from rocks adjacent to The Hut.
An ambulance spokesman said the boy swam to the other side of the river, where police search and rescue officers pulled him to safety about 6pm.
The boy is believed to have suffered a suspected fracture in his lower leg. He was transported to the Launceston General Hospital.
People were stopped from using the Trevallyn-side walking track for about an hour during the rescue operation.
