29 BRYAN GREEN and IAN GONINON clashed at the AFL Grand Final with the Northern Midlands councillor and former president of South Launceston Football Club claiming the Deputy Premier assaulted him. Mr Green conceded there had been a confrontation but denied striking Mr Goninon. There were threats of legal action from both parties but nothing seems to have eventuated.
28 DANIEL GEALE started the year with a revenge win over Anthony Mundine but suffered a defeat to British boxer Darren Barker in Atlantic City in August. He may have lost the world title but the quietly spoken boy from Rocherlea didn't lose too many fans as he prepares to win back his crown in the New Year.
27 ALBERT VAN ZETTEN continued the good fight for Launceston during 2013 and tried again to bury the hatchet with the Mayor of Hobart DAMON THOMAS. The two mayors decided to put aside traditional North-South rivalries and join forces to lobby the major political parties in the lead-up to the state election.
26 JAMES FAULKNER made his One Day International cricket debut for Australia and then his Test debut in England in August. Selection for the home Ashes series resulted in two 12th man roles before a broken thumb sustained in the WACA nets put him out of action for the rest of the series.
25 COLIN RUSSELL spent 71 days in a Russian prison after being arrested with 29 other protesters on the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise. The Hobart radio operator only got out on bail on November 30 after an international outcry and pleas from his wife CHRISTINE and daughter MADELEINE who went to Russia to demand his release.
24 RUTH FORREST's advocacy of same- sex marriage and support for abortion reform didn't please some of her fellow Legislative Councillors but made her one of the better- performed members of the Tasmanian Upper House in 2013.
23 SAUL ESLAKE continued to be the voice of reason on matters economic in Australia. The Bank of America Merrill Lynch chief economist debunked the debt ceiling and reminded us that there are five times as many people employed in selling and maintaining cars in Australia as there are in making them.
22 JACQUI LAMBIE has certainly made an impression since winning a Senate seat for the Palmer United Party at the federal election. The former soldier has been declared the party leader in Tasmania and sent potential state PUP candidate MARTI ZUCCO packing after a falling out. She doesn't actually become a Senator until June.
21 GEOFF LYONS must have known the polls were against him holding Bass at the federal election and a couple of political gaffes during the campaign didn't help his re-election chances. And it was bad news for fellow ALP members DICK ADAMS in Lyons, losing his seat after 20 years, and SID SIDEBOTTOM after six years as the member for Braddon.
