Police said the workplace accident occurred about 9.30 this morning on a boat working off Butlers Beach, south Bruny Island.

The man was taken to Dover and then airlifted by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter to the Royal Hobart Hospital.

He later died as a result of his injuries.

Workplace Standards and Tasmania Police are investigating the accident.

A report is being prepared for the coroner.
