ATTORNEY General Brian Wightman is tipped to take on the role of Labor education spokesman in the lead-up to the state election according to those within the sector.

The former school principal has previously taken on the portfolio held by Greens leader Nick McKim when he has been on leave, he has retained his Australian Education Union membership and has addressed at least one Gonski education rally.
He also recently stepped in as the Labor education spokesman at last month's Tasmanian Association of State School Organisations annual conference.
Association president Jenny Eddington said it had been spoken about for a while by those in the sector and many believed Mr Wightman would be the likely person.
She said because of his background as a former teacher and principal he was the obvious choice.
"Of all the people, Brian Wightman is certainly the most experienced in the education space, as an ex-principal and certainly when he speaks about things, he speaks from that understanding of the system, compared to what Nick does," Mrs Eddington said.
Tasmanian Principals Association president David Raw said he felt the sector should not be politicised but if it happens to be Mr Wightman, that would be fantastic because of his past link to schools.
Mr Wightman said he had not been appointed Labor's education spokesman but did not rule it out.
"I am very passionate about education, I think anyone who has watched me in parliament knows that," Mr Wightman said.
