Premier Lara Giddings yesterday announced the state government had commissioned Tasmanian shoe company Baby Paws to make two pairs of booties for Prince William and Kate's newborn son.
The shoes, which cost about $35 each, will be part of the state's official gift to mark the birth of Prince George of Cambridge.
``In the past their products have been gifted to the children of Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary so they are shoes that are truly fit for royalty,'' Ms Giddings said.
It follows Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's decision to donate $10,000 towards bilby research at Toronga Zoo in Sydney, which will name an enclosure after the royal bub.
Ms Giddings congratulated the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the birth of their first son and said it was appropriate that the people of Tasmania send a small gift.
The state government will also make a donation of $3000 to the Smith Family.
``This gift will be used to help vulnerable Tasmanian children get the best start in life, which I know is something the royal couple would support,'' Ms Giddings said.
She said the young family would be welcome in Tasmania at any time.
``I hope that we will get the opportunity to see the royal couple and Prince George in Australia in the near future,'' she said.
