Mary Meets Mohammad , a finalist at the Australian International Documentary Conference, begins by exploring the Tasmanian community's reaction to Pontville Detention Centre.

One person who did not welcome the arrival of 400 male asylum seekers to Pontville was Bridgewater Knitting Club member Mary.

Rumours of the ``luxurious life'' lead by detainees soon compel Mary to accompany a fellow knitter to the centre - here, she meets Mohammad, from the Afghan Hazara minority.

The documentary follows the relationship that builds between Mary and Mohammad within and eventually outside of the detention centre's walls.

It will be shown at the University of Tasmania's Sir Raymond Ferrall Centre at Newnham on Wednesday at 6pm.

UTAS Launceston engagement and development manager Jo Archer said the documentary showcased a ``real story of real people''.

``It's a great way to build better appreciation of refugees as individuals - people with names, families, fears and humour - not just as part of the collective `refugee','' Mrs Archer said.

``We don't stop to imagine what it could be like to have to leave your own home, country and family.''

Film-maker Heather Kirkpatrick, a former UTAS student, will be present for a question and answer session after the film.
