Although the guidelines and maps were initially going to be made available to each principal and school community, Mr McKim has made them publicly available to view on the Education Department's website.
He said the new guidelines, which will come into play in 2015, were in no way meant to prevent parents from sending their children to schools outside their home area but ensured there was a consistent approach to how it was determined.
``This consultation provides an important opportunity for the community, who are best placed to identify local issues to further inform this process,'' Mr McKim said.
``This is a genuine opportunity for the community to have their say and help us improve the current draft procedures so we can achieve the best possible outcome for the Tasmanian public education system.''
He said the new maps have been based on census data.
School communities and the general public have until August 30 to provide comment to the guidelines.
