THE law that excludes same-sex couples from marriage is a form of discrimination, according to a new Launceston group that is fighting for the issue to be reintroduced into the upper house.

A legislative bill on same-sex marriage was voted down by eight votes to six by the Legislative Council in September last year.
Marriage equality group organiser Margaret Hughes said the issue would not go away.
Dr Hughes said anyone interested in showing support for marriage equality should attend a family-fun barbecue at Royal Park from 12.30pm to 2pm today.
She said marriage equality was not just an issue for people in same-sex relationships.
"This reflects on our whole society," Dr Hughes said.
"Until we have marriage equality, discrimination continues.
"There is a cohort of people who are saying that it wasn't passed in the upper house and that we should just leave it.
"But it was only a two-vote difference. We want it reintroduced for future debate."
Dr Hughes said she would be speaking at the event, alongside Rosevears MLC Kerry Finch and Tasmanian Gay and Lesbian Rights activist Rodney Croome.
"Enjoy a piece of rainbow cake, listen to some music and share your message of support," she said.
