The Launceston Cup falls on Wednesday, February 27, which is in week 4 of the first term, and has been declared a public holiday.
The Devonport Cup, on Wednesday, January 9, and Hobart Cup, Sunday, February 10, fall during holidays or a weekend.
Education Department deputy secretary Andrew Finch confirmed schools in the North would observe the day as a public holiday.
He said public holidays, including Launceston Cup Day, were part of teachers' entitlements under their award and the department observed these.
According to the state government's workplace standards public holidays for 2013, the day is generally only recognised by public servants.
Many places outside of Launceston, such as George Town and the Glamorgan Spring Bay area, will observe the day as a full public holiday, yet many suburbs within the city will only recognise it from 11am.
