The exception was the area along the East Coast between Bicheno and Moulting Lagoon, where a fire raged out of control although conditions had eased to 15km/h winds and average temperatures.
Duty forecaster Damien Everett said yesterday's conditions at Bicheno contrasted with the 44km/h winds and 33-35 degrees that the Glamorgan-Spring Bay town had experienced in the previous two days.
And although yesterday's temperatures failed to match Friday's record highs, Cressy recorded 33.5 degrees and the mercury nudged 30 degrees at several Northern centres including Launceston (31 degrees), Sheffield (29.9), Ross (29.4) and Ouse (28.4).
By contrast, St Helens (19.7 degrees) and Bicheno (20.8) were eclipsed by the 24.4 degrees recorded at Liawenee, which is better known for its Antarctic-like temperatures.
Firefighting conditions improved at Dunalley where the midnight temperature of 30.5 degrees had fallen to 17.4 degrees at 4am and rose to just 23.5 degrees between noon and 2.30pm.
And the wind that gusted to 82km/h on Friday night and 48km/h at 3am had calmed by 3pm yesterday to 17km/h.
Mr Everett said average or slightly above-average temperatures were the order of the day yesterday and similar benign conditions would continue across Tasmania for the next few days.
