The Riverside Lions Club presented more than $12,000 to the appeal yesterday, gathered from last Sunday's annual Launceston Carols by Candlelight.
Event co-ordinator Phil Crowden said despite bad weather, the City Park event was a success.
``You looked out in the crowd, and nearly everyone was a family, and that's what the carols are all about - family,'' Mr Crowden said.
``We had so much community support, for example, the Launceston Football Club was there at midnight packing everything up.''
The Examiner's editor Martin Gilmour paid tribute to the dedicated Lions club members and the artists who made Carols by Candlelight such a great success this year.
``This donation will go straight to the four charities and be distributed to needy families in Northern Tasmania,'' Mr Gilmour said.
``The generosity of Northern Tasmanians in tough economic times is truly amazing, and Carols by Candlelight is a fantastic family night that also helps others.''
The total donations from the appeal will be donated to the Launceston Benevolent Society, the St Vincent de Paul Society, the Launceston City Mission and The Salvation Army this morning.
