It was revealed at the end of November that the two primary schools were considering some form of merger that would also involve Brooks High School to secure funding under the state government's $3.5 million School Transition Fund.
Moriarty and Wesley Vale primary schools on Tuesday confirmed an amalgamation, with a new school to be formed at the Wesley Vale site.
Mayfield Primary School Association co-chairman Phil Dean yesterday said the decision was being left entirely up to parents through the vote.
"I think most people will go with it (the amalgamation) but it's hard to say," he said.
Mr Dean said parents understood the reasons for the vote but at the end of the day they just wanted what is best for their child.
Mr Dean said voting forms not returned would be counted as a yes in favour of the merger.
An option being discussed would see the Rocherlea site become a Brooks High School middle school for grades 7 and 8, with all primary pupils moved to Mayfield.A result from the ballot is expected on Tuesday.
