In the wake of moves to bring additional Tasmanian AFL games to Hobart, Northern leaders are uniting in a push to retain the Launceston venue as the state's solitary home of AFL football.
Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten will be joined by other Northern mayors today to show support for the ground.
They will speak about the importance of AFL at Aurora Stadium for Tasmania.
While the Tasmanian government is set to embark on negotiations with Hawthorn to play more games in Launceston, other AFL clubs have expressed an interest in playing in the state.
When Richmond chief executive Brendon Gale met Premier David Bartlett and Cricket Tasmania to discuss playing at Bellerive Oval, questions were asked about why interested parties were not being directed towards the State's purpose-built AFL venue to avoid unnecessary duplication.
"Jim Bacon and every Premier since have stressed that Aurora Stadium is the home of AFL football in Tasmania, so why are these people not being directed to talk to us?" Inveresk Precinct Authority chairman Robin McKendrick said.
Launceston MLC Don Wing said the Bellerive push was a "betrayal" of Mr Bacon's vision while Launceston alderman Ray Shipp said the former premier would "turn in his grave" if he knew what was going on.
