MELBOURNE - Two outrigger canoes manned by 10 men and four women have set out from Port Welshpool in eastern Victoria to cross Bass Strait to raise money for cancer research. It is hoped that the 14m-long outriggers will reach Bridport in 17 days and create history as the first outriggers ever to make the voyage. The paddlers, members of the Australian Outrigger Canoe Racing Association, are aiming to raise $50,000 for cancer research and generate awareness of non- Hodgkinson's lymphoma. Team member and outrigger builder Peter Corbishley was diagnosed with terminal non- Hodgkinson's T-cell lymphona last year.
