 Confidence vote: heat on O'Byrne

Confidence vote: heat on O'Byrne

17 Nov, 2011 07:19 AM
THE Liberal Party will today move a no- confidence motion in Health Minister Michelle O'Byrne.

It will be the sixth no-confidence or censure motion debated in Parliament this year.

It follows revelations yesterday nurses had been instructed not to lobby patients on the elective surgery waiting list.

An email, obtained by the Liberal Party, provides a script for staff to follow in response to concerned elective surgery patients.

It states encouraging patients to write to politicians or make a complaint "are NOT appropriate".

Acting chief executive officer of the Southern Area Health Service Jane Holden said the email was prompted by the unplanned absence of a neurosurgeon, not budget cuts.

"There was no hospital-wide instruction given to nurses at the RHH (Royal Hobart Hospital) prohibiting them from lobbying patients to complain about budget savings," Ms Holden said.

The Liberal Party seized on the leaked email, claiming the government was attempting to gag nurses.

"Or is this just an attempt to bully nurses into being apologists for the Green-Labor government?" Liberal leader Will Hodgman said.

Australian Nursing Federation state secretary Neroli Ellis said the email reflected the culture of the RHH.

She accused management of "hiding the truth and (being) misleading".

The email was only distributed to a small number of senior nurses.

The Liberals also challenged the state government over ambulance response times in Parliament yesterday, after a Hobart doctor drove his patient to hospital because an ambulance took too long.

Health Minister Michelle O'Byrne said she was not aware of the case, but would investigate.

An ambulance arrived within 11 minutes and 24 seconds in response to half of emergency calls last financial year.

Ms O'Byrne said this was a 24-second increase from the previous year, but demand had increased with ambulances attending 73,485 times compared with 69,899.

Let's hope Nick and Cassie grow a back bone and support this no confidence motion in a Minister who can only say to the public "I can't tell you what you want to hear".

The money has to have been spent somewhere ~ why hasn't this arrogant, irresponsible Government been taken to account.

Bartlett and Aird knew what they had done and left the sinking ship without taking responsibility, since then all we have seen is complete arrogance and utter waste.

Bring on an election and lets hope someone else can right the wrongs.

keep the heat on Michelle O'Byrne and while we still have freedom of speech, the nurses should be free to state how these cuts affect them.

after watching yesterdays disgraceful performance in parliament question time by O'byrne the sooner she goes the better, she demonstrated complete disregard for the effects her savage cuts will have on the people of tasmania requiring community or hospital treatment, her stock answer was that money comes before people and her contemptuous responses to being questioned on her health strategy by the opposition was sickening.

The nurses federation (ANF) are playing a game with the Liberals. If they were serious about front line cuts they would be having rolling stoppages or striking like their counterparts in Victoria. The difference between the two states is that Victoria is a Liberal state government and in Tasmania, it's a Labor state government. The ANF won't upset the Labor government in case it leads to Liberal being elected.

The Greens won"t go against Labor as they are bed buddies now,The Greens should take a stand and send a message to Labor by supporting the Liberals because the cuts to the Health Sector is the wrong way to go as people are going to die waiting for beds or surgery,Bring on an Election!

Agree with fed up . Bartlett and Aird knew well in advance what was coming . Unfortunately Tasmania has been left in an untenable situation .We now have a Government that lacks true leadership ,and is hampered by the fence sitting greens who also have no perception of reality or management , just their own selfish needs.

Once again Tasmania"s unofficial "Minister for Misinformation" Ita has voice her opinion with strong political bias.

The nurses union in tasmania is not as strong and would struggle to have the same impact as their Victorian counterpart. It has nothing to do with the Government in power of each state. A Union is only as strong as its members and when the a very high percentage are not members as is the Tasmanian case, the measures taken have to be carefully considered, just just based on which Government is in power.

If the Greens didn't have a minister they would be strongly opposing these cuts to health. They just want power, not what's good for Tas which is why they won't support the no confidence votes. Selfish, selfish, selfish.

I agree with Ita I dont think the ANF are doing enough to save the jobs of their members. Im sorry but a petition and a few rallys are not enough, take a leaf out the the victorian nurses books and start some hard hitting industrial action and show this pathetic government we mean business. I am and ANF member but wont be shortly when I lose my job and if some more action is take soon I hope other nurses leave the union because your simply not doing enough

I agree with @Irrate nurse, 1100. I am an RN and yes, the union are rubbish. If all nurses understood vicarious liability, the ANF in Tas would be reduced to zero membership. The ANF have the teeth of a gummy shark, however, the real issue is lack of quality politicians in this state, especially in health and education. We had a federal gov pouring money into health and education but now a state gov that is stripping it bare, not dissimiliar to the Liberals a few years ago when they slashed nurses. Unfortunately we have no alternative government and no alternative nurses union.
