Tasmania police said that the accident occured near Sandy Cape Road at 3am.
Police said that the dead man was a backseat passenger in a vehicle which was trying to tow a bogged vehicle out of sand.
The towing assembly of the towed vehicle came loose and the tow ball and snatch strap then smashed through the windsreen striking him in the head and causing fatal head injuries.
It is unclear at this stage whether the car was being towed out backwards and whether the tow bar crashed through the front or back window.
A helicopter rescue was cancelled once Smithton paramedics reached the scene and could not revive the man.
Police said that the man had been part of an end-of-year football trip to Temma.
