Ten-year-old Jaymie Leonard Fisher was reported missing from his mother's Glenorchy home on Friday last week.
His disappearance sparked a large-scale search, which included the Westpac rescue helicopter and a large number of personnel, including police and the State Emergency Service.
The boy's mother, Rachel Fisher, told police that she had been contacted by her son about 9pm on Monday.
She also told police that she knew her son's whereabouts but would not tell them where he was.
Jaymie was found safe and well at a home at West Moonah this morning.
Inspector Burk said police met with Ms Fisher on Tuesday night, but she again refused to tell them Jaymie's location.
"It's been frustrating of course, because she's had information which she's refused to give to us,'' Inspector Burk told a press conference this afternoon.
"So it's been elongated and protracted because of that.''
The investigation into the boy's disappearance is still ongoing, Inspector Burke said, and police would not rule out charges being laid against Ms Fisher.
"The investigation is still going, it hasn't stopped today,'' Inspector Burk said.
"The aspect in regard to Jaymie being missing has been resolved, but there are further inquiries to be done.
"As the matter could ultimately end up before the court, charges need to be considered ... we're investigating whether a crime or offence has been disclosed.''
