The Examiner's chief political reporter Angus Livingston said the plane's front wheel did not come down and the plane skidded along the tarmac.
Airport emergency crews attended the scene but no one appeared hurt.
The plane was also carrying media to the island for an announcement on the reopening of the Swift Australia abattoir.
Premier David Bartlett and Greens leader Nick McKim also flew to King Island this morning with a media entourage and their plane landed without incident.
Human error has been blamed for the crash with the pilot forgetting to put the wheels down.
Mr Green said he did not know anything was wrong until the propellers stopped suddenly and there was a loud noise.
It is the second time Mr Green has been involved in a light plane crash.
He was onboard a plane that crashed on Prime Seal Island during a hunting trip in 2006.
The chartered flight came down heavily just after take-off from the island.
Mr Green said today's crash landing was much smoother than 2006.
