Nicholas Whiteley, 21, died from a gunshot wound to the stomach in the backyard of his home in Jones Street, Westbury, shortly after 9am.
The shot was fired by a 59-year-old senior constable who, according to police, had gone to the property to act in a pre-arranged domestic-related role.
The policeman radioed for help and was found bleeding from the head outside the home when backup arrived.
Police and paramedics provided the seriously injured Mr Whiteley with first aid but he died at the scene.
Police are continuing to investigate what happened in the house leading up to the shooting. Mr Whiteley was the only person home at the time.
The policeman had reportedly deployed his capsicum spray before firing his police-issue handgun.
Some neighbours told police his girlfriend Sheena Button had left with their baby in the early hours of the morning after a fight but the ABC reported yesterday that Ms Button had denied there was an argument.
A Tasmania Police command bus remained outside the small brick home yesterday, while forensic officers arrived in the afternoon to continue their analysis.
One neighbour who did not wish to be named said she had lived near Mr Whiteley for some time and knew his family well.
"I feel very sorry for them," she said.
"He never caused any trouble and I certainly never heard any noise or parties at his place.
"It's shocking."
