Hughes weathers stormy final to take title

LESTER Hughes overcame the conditions and the opponents to win the Australian golf croquet handicap final in Launceston yesterday.

The New South Welshman was appropriately dressed in wet- weather pants, jacket and wetsuit boots for the rain- drenched climax to the tournament in which he defeated ACT adversary and two-time champion Tony Hall, dressed in more traditional whites.

Held at the sport's new centre at St Leonards, Croquet Australia's five-day championships featured handicap doubles and singles events.

Despite a clap of thunder during the final, sources at the venue reported that only lightning storms cease play.
