The World Martial Arts Academy of Traditional Wing Chun Kung-Fu Tasmania hosted a two-hour seminar at the gym using a wooden dummy application.
Head instructor Leigh Duff said the dummy helped about 27 students learn how to apply wing chun principles to real-life combat situations.
``Some of the principles are using two hands at a time, not fighting force with force and pressure-point strike,'' Mr Duff said.
``The dummy is good because it allows you to hit it at full strength without causing damage and injury.''
Mr Duff said wing chun kung-fu, the only martial art created by a woman, was unique as it was based on the human body.
``It is designed for real self-defence, it is not a sport and it is designed for fending off people who are bigger and stronger than you,'' he said.
