'Torture': Man pleads guilty to dozens of physical, sexual violence counts

The man, who cannot be named as doing so would identify his victim, pleaded guilty in the Supreme Court in Burnie on Tuesday, November 21 to 24 charges including multiple counts of rape, assaults and strangulation.

Though the full details of the crimes were not read on Tuesday, the court heard the offences were committed over a two-day period in June this year and included locking the woman in a cage, burning her with cooking utensils, pouring oven cleaner on her and urinating on her.

Defence lawyer Kirsten Abercromby and Crown prosecutor Claire Flockhart agreed a full plea hearing would take at least half a day, and Justice Jago adjourned the reading of the facts until December 8.

During an earlier appearance in the Burnie Magistrates Court, police prosecutor Lee Taousanis said the woman was "physically and emotionally tortured".

"Thirty-year police veterans have described this as one of the worst cases of sexual and physical violence they have ever seen," Senior Constable Taousanis said.

At the time, Magistrate Katie Edwards said they were "appalling allegations", and defence lawyer Christopher Duncan said it was "significant offending".

"I don't think saying 'incredibly serious' can even come close," Ms Edwards said.

One of the counts of assault referred to the man threatening to kill his partner by inserting a knife in her anus, while holding a knife.

On another occasion he threatened to kill her by pouring petrol on her while holding a jerry can, the court heard.

He pleaded guilty to charges related to burning the woman with a hot cooking utensil to the arm, breast and buttocks, and a charge relating to rubbing his own faeces all over her body.

The man requested to appear in person on the next occasion, and Justice Jago remanded him in custody to appear again in the Burnie Supreme Court on December 8.
