The son of former star mare Rebel Bride was an impressive debut winner on his home track on Sunday.
Despite racing wide, the Needs Further gelding charged clear in the home straight to score by two lengths.
Gaffney told the Tasracing web site she thought Cornelian Bay might be special from the first day she saw him and is optimistic he will live up to her expectations.
"(But) we've had to be very patient and not push him too hard because he is such a big horse," the trainer said.
"I liked everything about this horse at the yearling sales and I was encouraged to buy him by a long-time friend and stable client Margot Smart who took 25 per cent then worked hard to get the rest of the shares sold."
Cornelian Bay cost $40,000 at the 2021 Magic Millions yearling sale in Launceston and was named by Mrs Smart after a small suburb of Hobart.
His older half brother Rebel Factor was also an impressive winner on Sunday and is being aimed at the $125,000 Newmarket Handicap in Novemeber.
ALPINE WOLF WINS ANOTHER TRIAL
Boom galloper Alpine Wolf won another trial at Spreyton on Tuesday morning as he prepares to return to racing after a six-month break.
The Barry Campbell-trained four-year-old hasn't started since winning the Launceston Guineas on Australia Day.
He subsequently had an operation to remove bone chips from a knee.
Alpine Wolf won a trial on his home track on July 26 and in his latest hit-out he beat stablemates Le Cadeau and Azara in the fastest time of the morning.
Jockey Daniel Ganderton took the gelding straight to the front and pushed him out in the straight to score by a length.
Campbell also won trials with Emily and Vetlanda as he heads towards what could be a lucrative spring and summer.
Alpine Wolf is entered for the Benchmark 84 Handicap at Moonee Valley on Saturday and the Open Handicap at Mowbray on Sunday.
WAR NEARING DEBUT FOR NEW STABLE
Smart Tasmanian sprinter War Correspondent has also been nominated for Moonee Valley on Saturday by his new trainer Maddie Raymond.
He is entered for both the main race, the $175,000 Carlyon Stakes over 1000m, and a benchmark 84 race worth $130,000 over 1200m.
As a back-up, Raymond has also nominated the gelding for a $55,000 benchmark 82 over 1000m at Murray Bridge on Saturday.
War Correspondent was previously trained at Wesley Vale by Glenn Stevenson and has won five of his 12 starts and $220,000.
He won at Moonee Valley in March last year but hasn't raced since two unplaced runs in Melbourne in September/October.
Stevenson said the now five-year-old needed to be trained near a beach and Raymond had that option at Warrnambool.
FAVOURITES GO DOWN IN 2YO HEATS
The favourites went down in both heats of the 2YO Sweepstakes at the rescheduled Hobart harness meeting on Tuesday night.
Karalta Artemus firmed from $1.45 to $1.20 for the colts and geldings' heat but settled last of the four runners after galloping out and raced roughly at various stages of the race.
In contrast, Nyack stepped straight to the front and travelled kindly before holding out Karalta Artemis by 6.8m in 2:01.82.
Nyack, trained and driven by Todd Rattray, is a full brother to Globe Derby Stakes winner Kohanah and has now scored twice in three starts.
Punters pulled the wrong rein again in the fillies' heat when Chasin Frankie ($3.60 to $4.80) led all the way to beat favourite Cee Tee Chelsea by a half head.
Cee Tee Chelsea firmed from $2.00 to $1.90 and trailed the leader before using the sprint lane.
Chasin Frankie was driven by Dylan Ford for Brighton trainer Tammy Langley.
There are further heats of the Sweepstakes in Hobart on Sunday night before two $26,000 finals on September 3.
