They said two people known to one another were reportedly in a serious condition.
"One has been taken to the Launceston General Hospital and the other has been transported to Mersey Community Hospital for medical treatment," police said at 8.31am.
"This is an isolated incident between two people known to one another and there is no ongoing risk to the community."
Police said they had closed part of George St near Woniora St and motorists and the public were asked to avoid the area until the scene was clear.
Forensic officers were in attendance and the CIB was investigating.
EARLIER: Two addresses in a Devonport street have been declared a crime scene following what Tasmania Police describe as an "isolated incident between two people".

Tasmania Police said the incident had been contained and there were no threats to the public

Part of George Street near Woniora Street has been closed, and Tasmania Police has asked motorists and the public to avoid the area.
Forensic officers are in attendance and CIB is investigating the matter.
