On Monday the state government announced it would be extending its free vaccination program until July 31 in light of a high spread of the flu across the state.
Initially the program, which covers flu vaccination administered at GP clinics, pharmacies and state-run clinics, was meant to run for four weeks, from June 6.
Premier and health minister Jeremy Rockliff said almost 250,000 Tasmanians had already rolled up their sleeves, but that this would ensure even more people had an opportunity to boost their protection.
"As expected, after two years of very few cases in Tasmania, influenza is re-emerging in the state and we are continuing to see cases rise significantly each week," he said.
"As of 26 June 2022, 1,670 confirmed cases of influenza have been notified to the Department of Health so far this calendar year, with weekly cases exceeding 350 per week in recent weeks.
"While almost three quarters of Tasmanians over 65 have already had their flu shot, there is still 25 per cent yet to receive a vaccine.
"Additionally, we are focused on increasing the rates of children aged between six months and five years with only 26.8 per cent having received a vaccine."
Mr Rockliff said it was also important to remember COVID boosters could be administered on the same day as an influenza vaccination.
Bookings are preferred for vaccinations at state-run clinics, although walk-ins are available.
