Education, Children and Youth Minister Roger Jaensch was asked in budget estimates for a staff breakdown based on the youth justice centre and education system, but said this would run the risk of identifying those involved.

"In Tasmania, with small numbers of people in divisions of departments in different locations, it's very difficult for information to be provided which doesn't lead to the identification or misidentification of people who might be subject to stand downs according to these sorts of allegations, which might also be historic, which have a very low bar for us accepting them and taking them seriously pending investigations," he said.

"So I won't be provided you with numbers of staff from divisions of our agencies, or locations of their work, regarding their stand downs.

"Staff are stood down, thorough investigation processes are undertaken, and we are committed to routine disclosure of the numbers of staff who are stood down at any point in time."

The government instead routinely publishes figures for the entire public service.

As of Tuesday, 32 state servants had been suspended from duty as a result of allegations of child sexual abuse.

Of those, 21 are located in the North and 11 in the South, and all had been referred to Tasmania Police.

Twenty-one are contemporary having occurred since 2018, and 11 occurred prior to then.

There have been 30 ED5 public service code of conduct investigations commenced. Six have been concluded with no breaches found and those involved returned to work, while one matter remains an active Tasmania Police investigation.

Last month, Education Department secretary Tim Bullard told the Commission of Inquiry 32 employees had been stood down in the past 12 to 18 months.

Greens leader Cassy O'Connor said the public had the right to know which agencies and public institutions the workers had been removed from.

"That is a choice you've made which has meant there's no transparency about where the problems are, the problem staff, in which parts of government," she said.

"These are publicly funded agencies. Parents in Tasmania entrust their children to schools, they know their kids are in Ashley, they can't be there for them.

"It is totally, totally unacceptable for your government to take a position that it shouldn't be transparent about where people are being removed from."

An independent investigation into the Education Department's handling of historic sexual abuse allegations included an appendix which showed the vast majority of schools had recorded incidents since the 1960s.

The Commission of Inquiry heard evidence of how the Education Department had no shared system as recently as 2020 capable of monitoring concerning patterns of behaviour regarding relief teacher conduct with students.

In one instance, four schools raised concerns about a teacher, but they remained on the register without investigation.

The Commission of Inquiry will focus on Ashley Youth Detention Centre when hearings resume next week.
