ALCORE - an 83 per cent-owned subsidiary of ASX-listed bauxite miner and rare earths explorer the ABx Group - is targeting the 2022-24 period for construction of a commercial aluminium fluoride plant at Bell Bay and the start of production.

It aims to increase production and start exports in 2025, using waste from aluminium smelters to make its products.

Production would be expected to start with about 50 jobs, potentially increasing to several hundred as output increased.

Aluminium fluoride is not currently produced in Australia, leaving the domestic aluminium industry dependent on imports.

ABx was well positioned to deliver on its strategies, chairman and former Tasmanian Labor premier Paul Lennon told the company's annual meeting on Wednesday.

That included completing the aluminium fluoride pilot plant stage as soon as practicable, so it could develop the initial commercial production operations with "appropriate risk-return strategies".

The Sydney-headquartered ABx Group is also working to speed up exploration for rare earth elements in Northern Tasmania and increase the "prospective geology" to maximise tonnage.

It also wants to start its Sunrise Bauxite Project in Queensland and develop a marketing business with Indian joint venture partner Rawmin Mining.

A company presentation said it had several Tasmanian bauxite deposits that could supply cement and fertiliser grade bauxite for many years.

Its first bauxite mine was at Bald Hill, near Campbell Town.

The company said that mine had been fully rehabilitated.

It said Sunrise was a 50-50 joint venture with a company associated with Rawmin called Alumin.

Alumin would provide up to $18 million expected to fund mine and port development (at Bundaberg).

That would give Alumin 49.9 per cent ownership of the project.

The deposit is at Binjour, 115 kilometres west of the Bundaberg Port.
