The Lefroy man activated a distress beacon late last night, alerting Australian Maritime Safety Authority who then called Tasmania Police.
A search commenced off the coast near Seymour with the assistance of Tasmania Police and Marine Rescue Volunteers from St Helens.
Inspector Darren Hopkins said sea and weather conditions prevented several attempts to get to the 67-year-old man, and an aircraft could not be used in the search due to the poor weather and low cloud.
"A nearby fishing vessel attempted to rescue the man around 1am without success," he said.
"A second attempt was then made by St Helens Volunteer Marine Rescue members and Tasmania Police."
It wasn't until about 3am this morning the man was pulled from his vessel, but during the rescue process he sustained injuries to his ribs.
He was taken to Bicheno where he was expected to be treated by paramedics.
"It is understood the man got into difficulty due to the strong swell and stormy conditions being pushed towards the shoreline and unable to use his motor to push the motor sailor away from danger," Inspector Hopkins said.
