The man and two young children, aged 10 and 11, began their walk at 10.30am yesterday, but their car was located by police in the carpark at 6.30pm after the father had called triple zero an hour before to say they were lost.
By 9.30pm, the family had not been found, and Tasmania Police Search and Rescue, Northern State Emergency Service volunteers and paramedics all arrived at the scene to begin searching.
The group were found just before 3am, after the 13 searchers had spent more than five hours trying to locate them.
They were found 150metres off the track near the falls, and were treated at the scene for mild hypothermia.
Tasmania Police Inspector Darren Hopkins said the family and searchers were expected to arrive back at the Meander Falls campsite about 6am today, after a predicted two-hour return trip.
He said weather conditions had prevented the use of any rescue aircraft.
"Given inclement weather is fast approaching with the winter season, Tasmania Police would like to remind walkers to go prepared for mishaps and delays, let someone know where you are walking to and what time you are expected back. It is always a good idea to take a personal locator beacon such as an PLB or Spot device to assist with locating walkers who may become lost or injured," he said.
