It's not any major test or exam, but the annual 24-hour, 80 kilometre fundraising walkathon.

At close to 11am on Thursday, April 14, having set off from the school at 9.30am the day before, arms wrapped around each other, the students made it up the hill to their familiar school faade.

Parents and the other year levels all rallied around the cohort - cheering on the weary group, parents recording the final 100 metres of the walkathon on their phones.

Ashlyn Mayes, 17, said her mother was cheering her on and had even volunteered to supervise part of the walk.

"I feel very emotional, I've grown up watching this since pre-kinder to now experiencing it for myself," she said. "I'm really proud of our grade.

"I'm looking forward to taking off my shoes, have a hot shower, a stretch and jumping into bed."

Toby Cannell, 17, said he was also exhausted to say the least.

"I'm sore all over," he said. "I want to go home and lay down in the shower. I can't imagine doing anything else.

"I've done runs, I've done walks but nothing like this, just non-stop through the night. You can't prepare for it."

The Year 12's all but collapsed onto the steps around the flagpole outside the senior school.

Headmaster Richard Ford, who had swapped his usual suit for his own hi-vis vest and walking gear, said how proud he and the school community was of this group.

"They walked through the night together," he said. "And earned a holiday like they've never earned a holiday before."
